A friend of mine has a daughter, Amelia aged 6 who was colouring an intricate pattern. She said.

"Someone took their colours away. Now we need to give them back their colour."

That is now my mantra for these yesterday  images , dedicated to them who came before us - the sons of our past.

GIUSEPPE CAMILLO PIETRO RICHIARDI

A captain from one of Italy's top cavalry units in 1890, Ricchiardi served under General Aguinaldo in the Philipine War of Independence in the steamy jungles against the USA. It was there that he learnt his guerrilla tactics. Ricchiardi took command of the “Italian Volunteer Legion”, a 200-men-strong outfit almost entirely composed by Italians, including immigrants in the Veld and ex-soldiers who had served in the Regio Esercito or under Giuseppe Garibaldi (oddly enough his son Ricciotti supported the Boers, while his grandson Peppino found himself on the British side).  At its height the Italian Scouts numbered around 200 members who with their dynamiting skills operated on the rearguard of the Boer forces during their retreat from the Tugela all the way to Komatiepoort on the Mocambiquean border.

MAJOR FREDRICH WILHELM RICHARD ALBRECHT

“Major Albrecht, the commandant of the Free State Artillery, the man who turned his two hundred men into a model corps. By birth a German, after taking part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, Major Albrecht was charged by the Free State with the formation of a corps of artillery-men. He acquitted himself of his task with true German thoroughness: his corps was an example of bravery, strict performance of duty, and capacity. Major Albrecht was taken prisoner in General Cronje's surrender at Paardenberg, on the 27th of February 1900.”

BOER PRISONERS OFWAR ARRIVE AT ST HELENA

There were over 6,000 prisoners held on St Helena over a two year period. It took 2 hours to offload the first large shipment, and the prisoners were aged between 14 and 60.  They then had to march to the camp  which took them about 3 hours. The prisoners worked during their stay - one even started a bakery in town, and others seem to have had small businesses going. They carved a lot of souvenirs which were sent away and sold locally for money to
send back to their families who were struggling to survive in South Africa. A number of the men died here, due to sickness that spread in large camp conditions. The facilities were very limited. A few were buried at St Paul’s, then the Baptist Graveyard became their burial place.
